Seems like Apple is really preparing to launch new product by not producing the previous one. After having out-of-stock status in UK, now it is also out-of-stock for both 8 GB and 16 GB in the US.
The quick search in Apple site reveals "currently available" status for iPhone series. The new iPhone is probably being announced in Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) early early June.
